Favorite Things 2.0

Hi, friends. Long time, no see! It’s been a little hectic around here this summer. Between short trips, long days at work, being in a wedding, and only having 24 hours in a day, I’ve found it quite difficult to work up the gumption to formulate cohesive words to share with you all. Despite all of that, I’m never gone for good. And this time around, I have words. So many words! It’s funny how quickly one small discovery can change everything. For me, these changes are coming in the form of living a more natural, chemical-free life. While I promise to go into more detail about this in a future post, I just had to share with you all the tip of the iceberg–my favorite things lately.

Lavender Essential Oil

In the most simplest of terms, essential oil is the product that results from either the distillation or cold pressing of plant elements. If I ever convinced you that essential oils were ESSENTIAL to your life (because they are and I will) and you told me you would only buy one ever–this would need to be the one. I could go on and on about the ways that lavender makes my life better. It’s calming scent aids in my bedtime routine and it’s antibacterial properties are found in my homemade face wash. In a society that values over-consumption, I feel grateful everyday for my one lil bottle of lavender essential oil and the bajillion ways that it packs a punch in my life.

Harney & Sons Tea

A few weeks ago I decided to go on a coffee detox. Which really just means that I stopped drinking two cups of coffee every morning. Now don’t get me wrong, I will always love coffee to the bottom of my heart. However, I want to be able to drink coffee to enjoy it, not rely on it to be a functional human. If I’m being honest, the real issue here is that I have a caffeine addiction that needed an intervention. While switching to a morning cup of tea is not ridding me of caffeine, it’s made a huge difference in how I feel.

I recently posted a picture on my Instagram of two Harney & Sons tea canisters, just so you all could see how beautiful they are. To be honest, it’s what attracted me to them in the first place #noshame. But really, they taste amazing. I just finished the flavor Chocolate Mint. I loved drinking this in the morning. It was a perfect way to wake up and give me a sweet little minty pep in my step. This weekend I went a little opposite in flavor and bought Hot Cinnamon Spice, which was just as delicious, if not more. It’s definitely reminiscent of fall!

“What to Eat” by Marion Nestle

I have a lot of questions and this book has a lot of answers. It was recommended to me by one of my friends (Alex) like 2 years ago. I bought it immediately, read a few pages, and eventually sent the book to the place where they all go when life gets busy. The bookshelf. Recently I’ve started doing a lot of research on more natural lifestyle habits and remembered that I had this book waiting for me on that shelf. It’s definitely no easy beach read, but it’s provided so much insight to the food industry and making healthy choices.

The book is organized by the aisles of the supermarket, which really gives me a whole new perspective of my local Kroger. From produce, dairy, meat and fish to processed and frozen foods, Marion Nestle offers a clear resource of information that is void of ulterior motives. Like most things in life, the supermarket and food industry is a business full of politics and controversies. This book leaves me feeling empowered to make informed choices about what types of food I choose to nourish my body. If you’ve ever literally wondered what to eat, this book is a must. Amazon sells many new and used copies as well as a downloadable Kindle version, for all you tech savvy readers out there.

I love lavender essential oil. It’s so nice in a diffuser or even just a few drops on a pillow before bed. I also keep dried lavender near by. That tea also sounds really nice. I love teas with a cinnamon kick in them. 🙂

Thanks for sharing, Sarirah! I think dried lavender is so beautiful-I have one sprig that I’ve kept for over 6 years now! I’ve also found that it’s great in my laundry.
